Why didn't we save ourselves when we had the chance?

The Age of Stupid stars Oscar-nominated Pete Postlethwaite as a man living alone in the devastated world of 2055, watching footage of the past and asking: why didn't we stop climate change when he had the chance. He plays the founder of The Global Archive, a storage facility located in the (now melted) Arctic, preserving all of humanity's achievements in the hope that the planet might one day be habitable again. He pulls together clips of archives, news and documentary from 1950-2008 to build a message showing what went wrong.

Rated PG and is recommended for mature audiences as it contains some profanity and disturbing images.

Yellow Fish Road Storm Drain Marking Program

In partnership with Trout Unlimited Canada, City Green Strategy has been providing this program to residents in Cambridge for more than ten years.

Most residents are not aware that many of their household products can be dangerous to both public health and the environment when disposed of in a storm drain.

As part of this program, volunteers paint yellow fish symbols next to storm drains and distribute fish-shaped brochures to nearby households. The brochures explain to residents the threats posed by toxic materials emptied into storm drains ending up in nearby waterways.

This is a great project for school children, community groups, and day camps!

City Green Strategy provides the marking kits, free of charge, that contain all the necessary items including a program guide for the adult leader(s) of the group. For more information or to arrange to borrow the marking kits, please call 519.740.4650 ext 4649 or email us at smithcathy@cambridge.ca. For more information, activities and games visit the Yellow Fish Road website

Cambridge Stewardship Gets Growing in 2007!

This new community-based tree-planting project aims to enhance public natural areas through volunteer effort. The focus is on establishing native plants and having fun with local groups, volunteers, residents, schools, and businesses along the way. "Stewardship" means a lot more than just planting trees though - it's about connecting to our city's natural areas through a range of activities.

The Cambridge Stewardship partners developed three projects for 2007:

1) acquire a trailer and planting equipment,
2) start planting, and
3) promote the Cambridge Natural Heritage Tour.

For background on the project and partners please see the Cambridge Stewardship files attached below.

Thanks to the support of volunteers and founding partners Home Depot, the City of Cambridge, the Cambridge Environmental Advisory Committee, Cambridge City Green Strategy, Our Lady of Fatima School and Hillcrest School students and teachers. The project was also supported through generous in-kind donations from Snowbear Ltd., McCordick Glove, Garant, Ryobi/Homelite, and Naturally Maintained Landscape Design and Installation Services Ltd. The 2007 projects would not be possible without funding from the Cambridge and North Dumfries Community Foundation, the Ages Foundation, the Ministry of Natural Resources' "Community Fisheries and Wildlife Involvement Program," the City of Cambridge, Cambridge City Green Strategy, and the TD Friends of the Environment Foundation.

Cambridge Stewardship in 2008

The Cambridge Stewardship project grew in 2008 from one planting site to nine and 837 trees, shrubs, and wildflowers were planted by over 300 volunteers! Also, you may have seen the Cambridge Stewardship trailer rolling through the City now it's the AWARD-WINNING trailer as it just won the national 3M Private Motor Truck Council Design Award. The founding partners chose images and slogans that reflected stewardship to adorn the trailer and Wally Escott and the Speedpro Imaging team donated extra time and premium materials to the finished project. The Cambridge and North Dumfries Community Foundation and Ages Foundation provided the funds to brand and launch the Cambridge Stewardship project including the vehicle wrap. Home Depots trailer supplier, SnowBear Limited, donated the trailer.

The Cambridge Stewardship project wouldn't exist without the support of volunteers and founding partners Home Depot, the City of Cambridge, the Cambridge Environmental Advisory Committee, Cambridge City Green Strategy, Our Lady of Fatima School and Hillcrest School. The project would not be possible without funding from the Cambridge and North Dumfries Community Foundation, the Ages Foundation, the Ministry of Natural Resources Community Fisheries and Wildlife Involvement Program, the City of Cambridge, Cambridge City Green Strategy, and the TD Friends of the Environment Foundation. Finally, thanks to all of the 2008 community partners and planters Frito Lay CHIP IN volunteers, Richard Dickson and Our Lady of Fatima school students, Joan Vanderburg and Jacob Hespeler Secondary School students, Hespeler Public School, Kim Fowler, the Fiddlesticks Board, Fiddlesticks Youth Recreation Extremists (FYRE), local scouts, Spooner Crescent neighbours, Andrea Kelterborn and Com Dev staff, Christopher Champlain Community Garden volunteers, and the Ancient Mariners.
