Vital Services
Vital service is defined as hydro or hot or cold water. The by-law applies to every building (or part of a building) that contains six (6) or more rented residential units in which at least one rental residential unit is occupied.
The by-law does not apply to a landlord in which the tenant has, as a part of their tenancy agreement, agreed to obtain and maintain the vital service.
Notice to the City of Cambridge will be provided by Cambridge and North Dumfries Hydro if there is a pending disconnection date of hydro. The City will ensure no disconnection happens, and the landlord may be charged. The maximum fine for a first time offence is $50,000 for an individual, and $100,000 for a corporation.
To report a concern with a vital service within the City of Cambridge, contact 519.740.4613, Monday to Friday between 8:30 am and 4:30 pm. You are encouraged to leave a message if the officer is not available. Your call will be returned within 24 hours as per the City of Cambridge procedure.
