City Departments
Fire Suppression Division
The overall mandate of the Fire Department is life safety. Within that mandate the primary role of the Suppression Division is to provide trained personnel, in a timely manner, to respond, utilizing the equipment provided, to calls for assistance form the citizens of this community. Fire Suppression personnel (Firefighters) respond to a wide variety of incidents besides fires, including medical calls under the tired response system, and specialized rescue in the areas of auto extrication, confined space, water/ice, high angle rescue, and response to hazardous material incidents.
The resources of the Suppression Division are also being applied to Prevention and Education programs in order to ensure their success. Suppression's commitment to the implementation and delivery of these educational programs and/or code enforcement duties are raising pubic awareness of the importance of fire safety and code compliance within the City. Cambridge Fire Department endeavours to ensure that departmental programs keep pace with the advancements in all aspects of fire and life safety. With the increased recognition of Prevention and Education as the primary tools for Fire Safety, the role of the Suppression members, because of their numbers (112 firefighters and officers), was expanded to include those activities. For many years crews have been involved in the "Safe Home Program" and "It's Up To You" Program. Suppression Crews also play a significant role in programs for the elderly, the young, (both in schools and in various youth groups), and in general with the public educating them about the issues of "Fire Safety."
Cambridge firefighters are trained to, and in many cases above, the current Provincial Standards. This commitment is required to maintain the level of competency necessary to continue to successfully respond to and deal with emergencies on behalf of the Corporation. To that end, Suppression crews spend a considerable amount of time training for high-risk rescue activities. Details of these training programs can be found in the Training Division section of this site.
Suppression crews are also assigned the responsibility of ensuring the equipment used during emergency responses is maintained in working order. Since the need for this equipment is unpredictable, it is necessary that checks be made regularly to ensure that it works when required. Complex repairs or scheduled equipment maintenance are handled by the Mechanical Division. While the stations are designed to efficiently house the vehicles and staff, they are still public buildings and must be cared for. Suppression Crews are responsible for the general day-to-day care and maintenance of the stations.
